What to Wear to a Pole Dancing Class: A Fun Guide for Beginners

Polates Perth Pole Dancing for beginners

Have you been looking for a fun workout that doesn’t feel like a chore? Pole dancing and pole fitness at Polates Perth could be for you! Pole dancing classes allow you to release your inner diva whilst also getting fit. As a beginner, you may be wondering what to wear to a pole dancing class. Fear not, we have you covered. At Polates Perth, we want our clients to feel confident and comfortable in all classes, and what you wear can make all the difference. Let us tell you what you can wear to pole dancing classes in Perth!

Embrace Your Inner Athlete: The Basics

Pole dancing is a great workout that enhances strength, rhythm, grace and flexibility. Here is the lowdown on what you can wear to make the most out of your class:

  • Fitted Tank Top or Sports Bra: You want to wear fitted clothing to be more comfortable on the pole. This will allow you to move more freely and confidently without your top riding up as you spin! Remember, you may be upside down in the class, so you want to ensure everything remains in place!
  • Shorts, Shorts, Shorts!: Skin contact with the pole is essential for the grip in pole dancing classes, therefore we recommend shorts. Fitted shorts are recommended, again so everything stays in place. Acceptable shorts could be bike shorts or some form of fitted shorts. Choose a pair that allows for a full range of motion and is also comfortable. We love high-waisted shorts for extra support and coverage.
  • Bare Feet or Pole Dancing Heels?: For beginners, it is recommended to come to class barefoot. Fear not, we will not make you learn a choreography with heels on if you are a beginner! As you progress, you may find it fun to invest in a pair of pole dancing heels to add a touch of glamour and grace to your movements. They can also help with certain moves.

What Not to Wear: Avoid These for a More Comfortable Class

Now you know what to wear, here is what not to wear to pole dancing classes at Polates Perth:

  • No Lotion or Oils: Gripping the pole is a must in any pole dancing class, no matter the difficulty. Any moisturiser or oils on your skin means slippery skin. Avoid applying any lotions or creams on the day of your class to ensure you have the best grip possible.
  • Baggy Clothing: Although you may feel more comfortable wearing baggy clothing, loose clothing does get in the way and can hinder your movement around the pole. We want you to feel confident in your skin but stick to stretchy and fitted fabrics where possible.
  • Jewellery: It is best to leave your bling at home! Bracelets, rings, and necklaces can scratch the pole and get in the way. Rings especially can have a negative impact on your grip. You wouldn’t want to break any of your lovely jewellery either!

Accessorise with Confidence: Adding Fun to Your Fitness

We encourage you to express yourself and have fun at Polates. We love what we do, and you should too! Be courageous, wear your favourite colours!

  • Leg Warmers or Knee Pads: Whilst looking straight out of an 80s movie, leg warmers or knee pads can protect your knees during floor work while adding a touch of colour and fun.
  • Headbands or Hair Ties: You don’t want to keep moving your hair out of your face so keep it away with a cute hair tie or scrunchie. You’ll be able to focus better and see the wonderful moves you’ll be doing!
  • Personal Touches: We are all for colour! Personalising your outfits, whether it’s wearing a funky pattern or your favourite bright colour, is definitely encouraged and will make you feel more confident and make the class more fun!
